A tale of otherworldly beauty and celestial secrets unfolds in this new take on Japan’s oldest folktale. Inspired by The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, the film reimagines Japan’s oldest folktale with a modern touch by integrating music, fantasy, and contemporary animation. Set in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi, the story unfolds as a live performance marrying original music with Yamashita’s signature style of polished visuals, emotive pacing, and dynamic 3D camerawork to boldly transform this classic tale for a new generation.

In early-1900s London, Lili Ichijouin, a Japanese exchange student travels to England to enroll in the prestigious Saint Thomas Art Academy. Determined to become a painter, she arrives under pressure: her parents expect her to rise to the top of her class within six months or return home. Lili's drive intensifies when she encounters Kit Church, a gifted aristocratic student known for his talent and detachment. While Kit has devoted himself entirely to painting, Lili's sincerity and resilience begin to shift something in him. The two share little beyond their love for art, yet their relationship quickly becomes central to life at the academy.

The animated short film collection "Chinese Tales 2" is jointly produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, Shanghai Film Studio, Bilibili, and Chen Liaoyu Studio. Chen Liaoyu is the chief director. The work brings together 12 directors to create 9 short films with different styles. The second part of the story will enter the world of fireworks. On the basis of continuing "telling Chinese stories in a Chinese way", it will focus more on the thinking and discussion of people's self-identity, family relationships, and social relationships, while continuing to show the fantasy imagination in the local context.
